SoCal Quilts of Valor

Quilts of ValorSoCal Quilts of Valor is a local chapter of a national non-profit group of volunteers who meet at SewVac Ltd. most Thursdays from 1:00 – 5:00 pm (except holidays). We meet to create and complete quilts for our military Veterans. We piece the tops, make a pillowcase (presentation case), and make the binding and label, while volunteer long-armers do the quilting. We can always use more quilters, as we produce about 40-50 quilts a month!

Some quilts are distributed through VA Hospitals including Long Beach, West L.A., and Sepulveda. Some are shipped to Bagram or Germany. Others are presented personally—sometimes even at our sewing workshops. The quilts are given to thank them for their service and/or to help them in their healing.

Our free sew days are open to anyone—novice or experienced. We even have teens from local high schools who learn to sew with us while earning their Service Learning Hours. We are a fun, casual group who work hard to show our appreciation for our Military. If you know how to sew, or want to learn, come join us. For those who don’t use a sewing machine, we need people to cut fabrics, trim threads, press, trim quilts after quilting, make binding and hand sew.

Drop by anytime to see what we are working on. You might learn a new quilt pattern or a useful shortcut and make new friends. Come for as long as you can whenever you can. Every hour helps get something else accomplished. Many hands make light work. For those not able to join us on Thursday afternoons, we have ‘homework” you can do. We pre-cut kits that need assembly, or you can help make pillowcases or binding at home, as well as hand-sewing the binding down to finish the quilts. We even have ironing to be done at home.

We have now made over 2500 quilts! Our group has been recognized for our accomplishments by several places. Come see our trophies in the back classroom, and stop by to say hi!

Visit QoV for some free patterns to get started with this good cause. You don’t need to pre-register for the sewing days. Just stop in on any Thursday afternoon and ask for Barbara!
