How to Take Advantage of a Fabric Sale

One of the best ways to take advantage of a SewVac Ltd. fabric sale is to stock up on backings for your quilt projects. But, how much do you need? And, what is the best way to sew that huge hunk of yardage together to form the backing?

We can help you with that!

The following information is based on specific quilt sizes so, if your project is a different size, be sure to adjust your yardages. Recommendations assume a usable fabric width of 42″.

Quilt Size Yardage to purchase
Twin – 63″ x 87″ 5.25 yards
Double – 78″ x 87″ 5.25 yards
Queen – 84″ x 92″ 7.5 yards
King – 100″ x 92″ 8 yards

After removing selvages, cut your backing into two or three pieces and seam together as illustrated below (we like to use a 1/2″ seam allowance for this). Remember, our images are based on the quilt sizes listed above with a few inches of margin all around; your mileage may vary!

Queen – 84″ x 92″ Queen
King – 100″ x 92″ King

After seaming, press again and fold backing to fit on a hanger and just hang it up until you’re ready to finish your quilt.
