California Tidepool

Susan Slesinger, one of our most popular teachers, loves art quilting. She teaches the craft and enjoys actively exploring the field. One of her most recent pieces is titled California Tidepool. This is a 15” square quilt, created for a Nature challenge for the Fifteen by Fifteen textile artists group.

California Tidepool by Susan SlesingerThe piece incorporates a number of techniques including fabric “created” with Texture Magic™, turned-edge and raw-edge machine appliqué, photo transfer, machine quilting, and couching. Incorporating all of these elements into a 15ʺ quilt, and working with the thick textured fabric posed a number of technical challenges.

Susan used cotton batiks, hand-dyed cheese cloth, photographs transferred onto cotton sateen and silk organza, wool yarn, decorative hand-dyed cotton embroidery threads, cotton batting, silk, rayon, polyester and cotton threads for this piece.

You can see all of the challenge pieces here, in the whole group reveal and you can read Susan’s exposition of her piece here.

Susan enjoys introducing novices to the joy of sewing as well as unleashing her students’ creativity. Her work has been featured in Designs in Machine Embroidery, America from the Heart, Creative Quilting, and The Secrets of Digital Quilting. Her quilts and garments have been displayed nationally and internationally at the Festival of Quilts (Birmingham England), the International Quilt Festivals (Houston, Chicago and Long Beach), Pacific International Quilt Festival, and Road to California.
