Ah, yes Grasshopper, then there was Dragonfly!

I am often asked by an incoming shopper of machines if I have a basic sewing machine; one that just sews? Now I mostly interpret that to mean that this customer is looking for a cheap machine but I shouldn’t always think that as so many of us just want a quality sewing machine to hem, piece quilts, and do an occasional craft or home-dec project easily and quickly. After consulting with the powers-that-be at Bernina, I think we have come up with an amazing machine and package that I’m calling The Best Basic Machine. Or, putting it another way – and you’ll see why, let’s just call it Dragonfly!

Perfect for when a sewer wants a basic machine that’s easy to thread, wind a bobbin, and simply sew on anything that they can fit under the needle; fix or darn lingerie, mend a boat cover, fix or attach a back-pack strap, hem a pair of jeans… get the idea? This person wants to do seemingly simple, yet at times challenging, repairs as well as to create. What if we had a machine to do these things just as we imagined? Now we do!

The Dragonfly is a special-edition Bernina machine with a very special FREE package of additional tools to help make sewing as basic as the machine. We start with a Bernina machine, the Dragonfly, with its 70 built-in stitches and two type fonts of lettering, automatic tension with a direct current motor (for amazing penetration power), needle up/down stopping at your choice, all stainless steel components placed in the most important places for durable yet uncomplicated sewing on the part of the user. Add fully automatic buttonholes, fully adjustable settings on all stitches, and an automatic memory at saving the stitch settings that you want, and we have a very special machine.

Now we add the freebies:

  • An electric-lift cabinet, the Tiny Titan! Everyone needs a place to sew; now you have it!
  • We’ve added a knee lift lever device (the third hand) to raise and lower the presser foot for you as you sew, keeping your hands free to help guide your material.
  • Dragonfly comes with a ¼-inch foot for piecing quilts.
  • The Bernina Walking Foot for quilting those quilts or for those heavy or sticky fabrics that need extra feeding power; call it four-wheel drive for your sewing machine.

Combined, all these features add up to about $750 if purchased separately but with Dragonfly, they are free.

We’re going to see how this machine flies! I believe if you build a best basic machine, people will buy it once they realize that simple and precision-made Swiss technology go hand-in-hand. The price for the complete Dragonfly package is $1799. We have 2-years no-interest financing that puts the monthly payment at just $75! What a great way to get basic sewing at its highest level.
